Abstract
The intent of this theoretical paper is to suggest solution to the much needed balance in global information flow through indigenous communication system. Evidently, at the root of the call for New World Information and Communication Order (NWICO) is the imbalance in the flow of global news and information, which appears either in quantitative or qualitative forms. Having established the relevance of the NWICO debate up till present, this paper sues for the end of blames and buck passing by countries the Third World. There is a tone of expectation and dependence associated with the NWICO demands which place the developing nations in bad light. Rather than waiting for the developed societies to end the information imbalance, a smart solution is for the developing nations to look inwards, shun dependence and evolve indigenous solutions which will give them a serious outlook in the discourse global information agenda. The indigenous communication system and its unique media present a unique opportunity of bridging this global information gap without dependence which furthers the information imbalance.
