Abstract

This paper offers a new perspective to photojournalism in disaster reportage. It goes back into time to examine disasters that have hit the world and demonstrates how, in each case, photojournalism made audiences to witness such events. But beyond that, it argues that photojournalists should, in addition to their primary role as reporters, give direct aid to disaster victims in the field. This is what the author has tagged “solution photojournalism”. It could help to reduce fatalities resulting from disasters and portray photojournalists as more socially responsible individuals who are not purely propelled by profit motive and the quest for scoops or exclusives.
