Abstract

Aesthetics in the 21st century is a significant part of the content creation process in broadcast media. It is concerned with using elements of broadcast aesthetics in attracting and capturing the attention of the audience. This study analysed aesthetic elements used in content production by NTA Channel 5 Abuja. The study is anchored on Uses and Gratification theory, while the content analysis research method was used to evaluate a total of 20 purposively selected programmes, produced and aired by NTA Abuja. Based on the analysis, the study found that NTA Abuja made use of aesthetic elements such as signature tunes, camera shot, lighting, set design, colour e.t.c, significantly relying on traditional aesthetics like sound. It also observed that NTA in some instances didn’t apply much creativity in utilising broadcast aesthetic elements especially visual elements like lighting, set design and colour. The study recommended that NTA Abuja should consider adopting more modern aesthetic approaches and innovations to improve its aesthetic outlook. The study concluded that proper application of aesthetic elements is necessary for broadcast stations to capture and retain the attention of its audience in modern times.
