Abstract
The integration of Artificial Intelligence in broadcasting is reshaping the media landscape in Nigeria, offering both opportunities and challenges. This study explores the challenges faced by Nigerian broadcasters and opportunities associated with adoption of AI in Nigerian broadcasting, with emphasis on organisational readiness, employment implications, ethical concerns, technical capacity, and the adequacy of existing legal and regulatory frameworks. A descriptive survey was conducted with 267 data collected from broadcasting professionals in both government and privately owned radio and television stations in the Federal Capital City, Kwara, Osun, and Oyo States of Nigeria. Findings revealed that organisational infrastructure and management support were not perceived as major barriers to AI adoption, whereas staff resistance, budget limitations, and inadequate national policy frameworks were identified as significant challenges. Respondents agreed that AI has automated routine broadcasting tasks, could contribute to job losses, and has reduced the need for some operational roles. While ethical concerns relating to misinformation, reduced editorial oversight, and algorithmic bias were generally disagreed, respondents agreed that ensuring the authenticity of AI-generated content and preventing manipulation of broadcast content remain important concerns. Limited access to AI training and inadequate AI-related technical skills were also identified, while most respondents agreed that media professionals have limited awareness of AI-related regulations. Based on these results, it was concluded that AI adoption in Nigerian broadcasting is progressing gradually but remains constrained by workforce capacity, financial resources, ethical concerns, and limited regulatory awareness.
