Abstract

This study is about the extent to which Glo news SMS is consistently delivered in Nigeria and whether such news SMS reflect events in Nigeria more than elsewhere. The study is theoretically framed by the uses and gratification theory. Through the content analysis research design, subscribed Glo news SMS between –Friday, 1st March 2013 to 31st August, 2013 were analysed. Findings: Glo Telecommunication’s news SMS delivery is very inconsistent -there is a significant difference between the expected consistency of news and the actual news delivered: X2 = 22.85; at DF 1, p < 0.05. However, the mobile news SMS is useful, reflects local events and issue in Nigeria more than those abroad. There is a significant difference between the number of Glo news SMS about Nigeria and news about other places: X2 = 12.613; at DF 1, p< 0.05, significant difference. based on the findings, the study recommends among other things that Glo and other telecommunications companies providing news services should be consistent as expected of conventional journalism;  the Nigerian Communications Commission, similar agencies as well as journalists and scholars should collaborate towards minimizing ethical and professional challenges in the application of telecommunications for media synergy and information dissemination.
