Abstract

The Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN) has been under knocks from many quarters for non-adherence to ethics and laws guiding its practice. This has led to the taking over of the regulation of the industry by various state governments. Ethics and laws are two vital ingredients in communication which practitioners must not toy with. This paper discusses the laws applicable to all practitioners of advertising in general namely: defamation, privacy, copyright, obscenity and indecency. It also discusses laws affecting outdoor advertising industry, the OAAN regulation, LASAA as an independent regulatory body and the need for legal control in the industry. It concludes that with various state Governments taking control of regulating outdoor advertising in their states, sanity has been restored and advertisers having value for their advertisements. It therefore recommends among others, that advertising practitioners should embrace discipline in the discharge of their duties and be APCON registered to ensure the promotion of professionalism.
