Abstract

Women generally, including those in Delta State, have been clamouring for equality with their men counterpart for a very long time. This study examined the influence of the mass media on discrimination and violence against women. Delta State was used as a measure of assessment. Data were derived from both primary and secondary sources. The questionnaire was the primary instrument while secondary sources included materials and publications such as books, journals, articles, the Internet  among others. Three hundred respondents compromising 100 women each from Abraka in Delta Central Senatorial Zone, Ogwashi-Ukwu in Delta North Senatorial Zone and Koko in Delta South Senatorial Zone were randomly selected. Findings revealed that there are many cases of violence against women in Delta State and that the mass media exposed women to numerous discriminatory practices.  There is increasing awareness through the mass media on sensitization of women to claim their rightful position in all ramifications. The study thus recommends that the mass media industry, as a major institution that has helped in the consciousness of the public, should increase its efforts in alleviating discrimination and violence against women.
