Abstract

This study examined public perception of the broadcast media in the fight against corruption  in Nigeria. Corruption is a global issue of concern but in Nigeria it has been an endemic problem with people at the realm of affairs enriching themselves at the expense of the country citizenry. Effects are poverty, unemployment, criminality and other forms of socio-economic challenges capable of winding dawn nation’s development. Thus, the broadcast media as the fourth estate of the realm is expected to expose and criticize abuse of power and unwholesome practices such as corruption. This paper adopted descriptive survey and structured interview while questionnaire and interview guide were used for data collection. Simple random sampling technique was employed to select the sample size of 150 respondents from the universe population of 4,679 comprising the two selected broadcasting stations- Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State and Fresh FM- radio stations. It was anchored on the Social Responsibility and Agenda-setting theories. It revealed that the media are unperturbed in their responsibilities despite the identified challenges such as persecution, assassination, unjust closure of media organisation and unfair incrassation. The paper concluded that since the media is seeing as agent of social change, there is dire need to step up actions in their efforts to curb the menace of corruption. This paper sourced from secondary data such as journals, library items, internet materials and desk study. The implication of this study is to portray the media as agents of social change and vanguard in the fight against corruption in Nigeria.
