Abstract

This study appraised the communication strategies adopted in woman’s development programmes and also sought to know whether the communication strategies used actually encouraged women’s participation. Four research questions were posed and the survey research method was adopted with the questionnaire as instrument of data collection. The multi-stage cluster sampling technique was adopted. The sample size was 1029 drawn from seven selected local government areas of Oyo State, Nigeria. Findings revealed that respondents’ participation in development programmes were enhanced by the communication strategies that they understood and identified with because of their low level of education. Respondents’ level of participation in health programmes was high but low in others. Majority of respondents participated in development programmes through workshops and trainings while few participated through group meetings, cooperative societies and churches. The study also found that more of interpersonal, group and traditional communication strategies were used. More of the broadcast media were used than the print media.
