The African Union was officially launched in 2002 as a successor of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU, 1963 - 2002) in efforts to promote the unity and solidarity of the African States, to coordinate and intensify their cooperation and efforts to achieve a better life for the peoples of Africa, to defend their sovereignty, their territorial integrity and independence, to eradicate all forms of colonialism from Africa and to promote international cooperation, having due regard to the Charter of the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The goal of this paper is to evaluate the efforts and effectiveness of the African Union towards promoting and protecting the Human rights of citizens of Africa. The design adopted is a critical evaluation assessment of the African Unions attempts and efforts to Human rights promotion and protection in the African continent. Secondary source of data which includes the use of books, journals, online materials, E books, conferences, summits, and so on served as the major source of information gathering. The African Union has contributed to the drafting of treaties to promote peace, democracy and good governance. Many of its treaties contain global firsts, though many member states still have loopholes in protecting democracy.
