Abstract

The importance of effective communication in championing national development cannot be overemphasized. It is against this background this study assesses the perception of residents of Kaduna State on the effectiveness of the communication tools used by the State government in disseminating information on the Urban Renewal Project. The study adopts mixed methods research approach to survey the perception of the residents using questionnaire and in-depth interview as instruments of data collection. A total of 400 copies of questionnaire were administered using multistage cluster sampling technique. In-depth interview was conducted with five communication expertise each representing a distinct component of the urban renewal project. The study found that residents are fully aware of the communication tools employed by the government in disseminating news on the project and perceive these tools to be very accessible while a large number perceives them as fairly accessible. Also, majority access news on the project mostly through social media, radio and television, interpersonal and group communication, in that order, with the print media as the least source of news. Overall, there is positive perception of the communication tools adopted by the Kaduna State government in the implementation of the project, although some residents find the tools to be fairly accessible. The study recommends the need to bridge communication gap between the government and the residents to keep them abreast of communication technologies and enhance effective communication of developmental projects and policies.
