Abstract

Plastic waste management is a critical environmental and socioeconomic concern globally, exacerbated in Nigeria by inadequate public knowledge, inefficient policies, and poor infrastructure, particularly in the Ijebu North Local Government Area. Despite these challenges, government agencies disseminate eco-friendly communication to mitigate plastic pollution. This exploratory study examined the awareness and knowledge of eco-friendly communication regarding plastic waste management among undergraduates in three selected tertiary institutions in Ijebu North: Olabisi Onabanjo University, Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic, and De Potters College of Health Technology. Using a survey method, the research assessed the sources of eco-friendly information, students' knowledge of waste practices, and communication's impact on their attitudes. Findings showed undergraduates possess a modest awareness and basic comprehension of plastic waste management, primarily gained through social media and educational institutions. However, a lack of comprehensive understanding of some eco-friendly techniques and efficient communication tactics persists. The study concluded that comprehensive educational strategies are crucial. The recommendations include curriculum integration of plastic waste modules, implementing practical exercises and hands-on engagement, launching targeted online campaigns via digital platforms and encouraging student sustainability groups. These initiatives are necessary to empower undergraduates, fostering efficient plastic waste management and contributing to a cleaner future.
