Abstract
There has been an increase in the number of campus radio stations in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The inadequacies and limited practical sessions in the Department of Mass Communication within Nigeria calls for the introduction and establishment of campus radio to serve as platform for student apprenticeship in media training. This paper provides an analogy of the emergence of campus radio and how it has been embedded in journalism and mass communication training in Nigerian universities. The paper relies on the tenets of diffusion of innovation theory to explain campus radio emergence. The paper identifies the various departments and educational programmes broadcast on Kanem FM. The paper also discusses the pedagogical approach to decolonizing campus radio stations in Nigeria. It advocates the need to introduce paid internships during holidays to enable students work extra hours and earn some stipends as done in other climes, so as to address the issue of programmes repetition.
