Abstact

This study explores the role and development of the mass communication in Botswana by using textual analysis to examine the contents of leading news outlets published in 2008. It provides a brief history, political, economic development of the country and relies on the twin concepts of development communication and communication development as its theoretical framework. The study found that mass media could play an important role in this emerging democracy if given the opportunity to operate freely.  Like mass media in most African countries, Botswana’s have to walk a tight rope as they promote liberal democracy in view of the government’s need to control the press.
