Abstract

This paper discusses the issues which inhibit the realization of community radio broadcasting in Nigeria.  The focal point of the discussion is the fact that a comprehensive national development agendum can only be realized when there is a functional community radio broadcasting system.  But rural poverty and the neglect of the rural areas over the past several decades have been identified as major obstacles to the establishment of community radio broadcasting in Nigeria.  The paper reveals that apart from political office holders, journalism educators in the country are equally culpable for ignoring or failing to give due emphasis on the critical role of community radio broadcasting in human national development.  However, the paper points the way towards realizing the community radio ideal in Nigeria by advocating some remedies to the parties concerned.
